Sikhs have been settling in Leicester since the end of the Second World War. The opening of the Sikh Gurdwarasin Leicester, in 1960, reflects the growth of the city’s Sikh population. By 2011, the Sikh population of the city had risen to 14,457, representing 4.4% of the city’s population (compared to 0.8% nationally). This Sikh presence continues to contribute very significantly to the social, political and religious life of the city and is especially evident at the annual Vaisakhi celebrations, attracting thousands of people from across Leicester and the Midlands, to a march through the streets of the city centre.

What is a Kirpan?
Following recent media coverage and public discussion, many people have been asking what a Kirpan is and why it is important within Sikhism.
In this BBC Radio interview, Kartar Singh Bring discusses the significance of the Kirpan as a sacred article of faith, the responsibilities that accompany it, and the importance of accurate understanding and respectful dialogue.
Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Henry Nowak during this difficult time.
Please listen, share, and help promote informed understanding of Sikh beliefs and practices.

Battle of Amritsar: Timeline
Operation Bluestar refers to the military invasion that was conducted by the Indian Army on the orders from Indira Gandhi [then PM of India], which commenced with an attack on the Sri Harmandir Sahib Complex. In an attempt to inflict maximum casualties and the demoralisation of the Sikhs, the attack took place on one the busiest days, the Shaheedi Divas of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Unofficial reports suggest that over 5000 civilians were killed during the Operation.
74 Gurdwara Sahibs across Panjab were also attacked by security forces, including Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran where 257 people were killed and Dera Baba Shyam Singh where the Border Security Force looted the Gurdwara Sahib and devotees.
This was a direct assault on the Sikh faith, and marked the beginning of a campaign of genocidal violence against the Sikhs. After the Operation, the army used municipal garbage trucks to transport dead bodies for illegal mass cremations: 25 to 30 people are cremated on each pyre and others were thrown in rivers and canals. The practice of “secret mass cremations” would be used reguarly by the State in the following decade to destroy evidence relating to thousands of Sikhs who had been unlawfully detained, tortured and killed by the government.
Operation Bluestar contributed to the demand for an independent Sikh State- an ongoing cause.

50th Anniversary of our Charity Registration Status at Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurudwara, Leicester 🎉
On 20 May 1976, Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Sahib was officially registered as a charity under the leadership of the Pardhan, Bhai Ajmer Singh Minhas.
As we celebrated the 50th anniversary of this historic milestone this May, we would like to thank the dedicated sewadars, Gyani Sahibans, past and present committees and the Leicester sangat for their unwavering support and commitment throughout the years.
You have stood by the Gurdwara Sahib through many challenges and hardships- from changing social structures to the difficulties faced during COVID-19 to the renovation projects undertaken for the future of the Gurdwara Sahib. Through every obstacle, the sangat has remained united.
The spirit of our sewadars continues to inspire us all. From the early hours of the morning, sewadars rise at 4am to lovingly prepare parshade for the sangat, and remain late into the evening helping to clean, organise and prepare for another day of seva ahead. It is through this selfless seva that the Gurdwara Sahib continues to flourish as a home for generations to come.
As part of our history project, we are looking for old photographs and videos of Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Sahib from past years- including programmes, seva, nagar kirtans, weddings, camps, renovation projects and other special memories.
If you or your family have any old photos or videos you would be willing to share, please send them to:
gtb_gurdwara@hotmail.co.uk
Once again, a massive thank you to the sangat for your love! 💛
